Caffeinated drinks tend to affect males more than females

Sweetened and caffeinated soft drinks can be difficult to resist, but experts say there are many reasons to try. Besides supplying the body with high amounts of sugar or artificial sweeteners, soda can provide a big dose of caffeine, which researchers are now saying affects men and women unequally.

A study published in the journal Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology found that male teens who consume excess caffeine experience a greater rush from it than their female peers.

The authors warned that caffeine raises blood pressure. They also noted that participants who consumed the most caffeine tended to have a higher intake of calories, fat, protein and sugar-loaded snacks.

Diet sodas are not without their drawbacks either. A study conducted in New York City found that those who consume large amounts of diet soft drinks increase their risk of stroke and other negative cardiovascular events.

Similar studies have revealed that caffeinated coffee beverages, such as the 30-ounce "Trenta" size recently unveiled by Starbucks, can pack a wallop in terms of calories.

Rather than indulging in highly processed drinks full of sugar or artificial chemicals, individuals looking to lose weight may consider drinking green tea instead. Not only does the beverage contain healthy levels of antioxidants, but it also contributes to a full feeling and helps the body burn fat.
