Choosing a Bariatric Surgery Procedure

If you're looking for a permanent weight loss treatment, weight loss surgery could be an option for you. Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, should not be used as a first approach to weight loss. Initial attempts through diet, exercise and behavior modification should be made. Surgery should only be considered after noninvasive options have been exhausted. In addition, specific health requirements must be met. Weight loss surgery is typically reserved for individuals who are morbidly obese. Morbid obesity is when you are more than 100 pounds overweight or you have a body mass index (BMI) over 40. However, a BMI of 35 to 39 combined with an obesity-related health condition, such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease, may also qualify you as a candidate. For the Lap Band procedure, the requirement is lower: patients with a BMI of 30 combined with one obesity-related health problem may qualify for Lap Band surgery. Having bariatric surgery involves a lifelong commitment to certain lifestyle changes. To successfully minimize side effects after surgery, you will need to consume small amounts of food and chew thoroughly and slowly.
