Vitamin D prevents a number of health conditions
Dietary sources of vitamin D are few and far between, so that many experts recommend carefully making healthy eating choices in order to get enough of the nutrient. Some vitamin D-rich foods can facilitate weight loss, and researchers are saying that high doses of the compound may even lower the risk of certain cancers.
Scientists at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have announced that large doses of vitamin D may reduce the incidence of breast cancer, though they added that the effective amount is much larger than they previously thought.
Their report, published in the journal Anticancer Research, determined that individuals must take between seven and 15 times the recommended daily dose for adults in order to see any anti-carcinogenic effect.
The National Institutes of Health recommends that adults consume 15 micrograms of vitamin D each day. The study's authors said that 200 micrograms was the upper limit of their studied dosage.
For everyday dietary health, consuming fresh salmon, mushrooms or a little cheese can deliver all the vitamin D necessary to maintain bone health, fuel cell processes and contribute to weight loss.
