Diet experts say that gluten-free foods may contain less nutrition

Many experts are warning individuals from abstaining from gluten because it could actually lead to weight gain, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Officials from the American Dietetics Association told the news source that sugars and fats are usually substituted for gluten in gluten-free foods. Furthermore, some gluten-free pastas are actually higher in carbohydrates than the regular variety.

People who suffer from celiac disease, which is an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine that prevents them from eating wheat-based products, are required to eat gluten-free foods in order to cope with the ailment.

Experts noted that many gluten-free foods do not contain iron, folic acid and vitamin B, which are added to many wheat-based products.

"For some people, if they are starting on any diet, they are more conscientious about what they are eating, so it is more likely they are just taking in less calories and fat." Heather Mangieri, a Pittsburgh-based registered dietitian and spokeswoman for the ADA, told the news source.

Health experts say eating a well-balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins can prevent obesity and help individuals lose weight.
